Heraclitus of Ephesus lived c. 535 – 475 BCE. He was a native of the city of Ephesus, an ancient Greek city on the Ionian coast. Which is situated in present day Turkey. Although born to affluent parents, he eschewed a life of luxury for a lonely life as a philosopher. Very critical of the lifestyles and cultures adopted by his peers, he was regarded as a misanthrope. He tended towards depression and is also called ‘the weeping philosopher’.
