It is the body that experiences, not the mind. Science is increasingly corroborating the ancient idea that memory is contained inside the cells of the body rather than the synapses or processes of the brain. ‘Memoria’ is an old name for the realm of experience we call Soul, that place where the imagination dwells. Traumas lodge their derived belief-systems inside the cells of our bodies, weighing down our postures, shaping our bodies, so that the horror we are unwilling to acknowledge and face becomes visible via the images our bodies project into the world.
Many ancient traditions have known for millennia that the body is simply a reverberation of Soul, while quantum physics tells us what we experience as 'body' is really energy and not as solid as it seems. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that bodywork is a powerful tool through which to root ourselves more deeply into Soul. At Sacred River we regularly employ dance, movement, postural amplifications, and different kinds of breath-work, in the work we do.
