mythology

‘The myth was a mighty force ruling Greek life, hovering above it like a near and splendid apparition.’

– Jacob Burckhardt, from The History of Greek Culture

When we read and take to heart the old myths, they touch us in a way that is very mysterious and baffling to the rational mind. If we become trained to ‘hold’ that mysterious ‘something’ in such a way that we feel more deeply into it, it gradually starts to take on shape and we become aware of some essence present ‘there’. Or more precisely, essences. Mythology has the power to evoke the very experiences and feelings that open us to the deepest nature of Soul.

If we are to not only study Soul but also live it, cultivating mythological consciousness is a powerful tool to wake us up into the depth we call 'Soul'. Soul, or embodying a mythical way of looking at things, flowers in us not simply from knowing the stories of mythology, but from opening to be deeply touched by all of life, as we are touched by the stories at the roots of consciousness, if we are receptive to them.
