‘The search for soul also means that we are in search of an idea of the soul, ideas that can give soul, soul-making ideas. Without them non-psychological ideas become invested with soul values, and we become infiltrated by ideologies. We have not only lost soul; we have lost even the idea of soul.’
– James Hillman, from Re-Visioning Psychology
There are no recipes for evoking our awakening into a sense of the sacred, or a sense of soul. But we do know that it is not a question simply of one ‘thing,’ but rather of many aspects and many dimensions of life. Like a beautiful garden whose beauty comes alive with variety on several planes, requiring tending in many places.
The great traditions known to foster soul, are clear that even though words can't define ‘how to find soul,’ artful play with words may wake it up so that its presence is felt even if it cannot be grasped. And that recurrent immersion in such an experience of soulfulness amidst heart-felt and deep communion with ideas in community, itself, mysteriously roots us more deeply into ways of fostering soul. ‘Mysteriously,’ because such change often occurs on levels deeper than conscious awareness apprehends.
At Sacred River, we endeavour to present regular talks in community, either via Zoom or in person, on and around ideas in such a manner that, if we are blessed, evoke in us a sense of the sacred and a sense of soul.
Note: Several talks are being offered. Please subscribe to the Sacred River Newsletter (click button below, in footer), to be kept abreast of new developments.
